Blepharoplasty In Newport Beach, Orange County

Blepharoplasty, also known as the eyelid lift or eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin or fat from the eyelids. This procedure can either be done for cosmetics or functional surgery.

At Orange County Plastic Surgery Clinic, surgeons use the latest and most advanced methods to produce the best results.

Blepharoplasty removes:

  • Loose or sagging skin which creates folds to the upper eyelid,
  • Fatty deposits in the eyelids,
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Excess skin and wrinkles in the lower eyelids
  • Floppy lower eyelids that show the white below the iris.

However, you must understand that blepharoplasty cannot remove wrinkles around the eyes completely. This is because they are fixed to the skin. Thus a skin wrinkle treatment is also needed.

Preparations before surgery, surgery, and recovery

Before the eyelid surgery, you should visit our clinic at the Newport Beach in Orange County to talk with our surgeons. The doctors take the patients through a detailed examination and discussion of blepharoplasty and its potential risks as well as its benefits. The patients are also given pre-operative instructions before the day of the surgery. This allows the patient to have any pain relief medications or necessary items such a gel packs, artificial tears, and gauze at home before their return from surgery.

Also, the surgeon performs the following procedures before the operation:

  • A physical examination which includes testing your tear production and measuring the parts of your eyelids.
  • Visual examination – your eyes will be examined and vision tested, including your peripheral vision.
  • Eyelid photography – your eyes will be photographed from different angles. These photos assist the surgeon in planning your surgery and assessing both immediate and long term impacts of the surgery.

This operation is done using either local anesthetic with intravenous medications or under light general aesthetic. This helps to keep the patient comfortable throughout the entire procedure. You don’t have to worry since an anesthesiologist will be present before the surgery to give you the best advice the best anesthetic plan. They are also present during the entire procedure to administer the anesthetics and monitor your safety, to ensure your comfort.

The surgery can involve skin incisions in the normal skin folds of the upper lids or below eyelashes of the lower lids or inside, the lower eyelid. The procedure takes approximately two hours for four eyelids. Delicate stitches are usually removed after five to six days.

Blepharoplasty patients should use peroxide on a Q-Tip to clean all external incisions and apply a light layer of Vaseline four times per day. There are possibilities to experience bruising and swelling on your face, especially if you had an eyelid procedure.

You should also anticipate discoloration on either the second or third day after the operation, but no need to worry. It diminishes between one to six weeks after surgery. This, however, depends on the additional procedures performed at one sitting.

Patients who undergo mid-facelift are cleared to resume their daily routine after approximately three to four days after surgery. However, they are advised to avoid activities which may cause discomfort.

The degree of post-operative discomfort is relatively mild. However, you can contact the Orange County Plastic Surgery Clinic if you experience significant bleeding around the incisions or a lot of pain. The external stitches are removed four to ten days after the surgery.

Even though all surgical procedures have some degree of risk, there are rare blepharoplasty complications.
